A recent development is the waterproof drop-out block, a solution that not only contributes to stable mounting, but also helps prevent water leakage in building structures. Jorrit Spijksma, Business Development Manager at SPARQ, talks about the development and benefits of this product.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The reason: a watertight solution<\/h2>\n<p>\"In our existing range, we had pop-out blocks made of aluminium. A fine product, but with a major disadvantage: they have to be cut from an extrusion profile, which takes extra processing and time. In addition, we saw a growing need for a solution that improved the waterproofing around the anchoring of balustrades,\" Spijksma explains.<\/p>\n<p>Challenges often arise when installing railings on waterproof substrates such as EPDM or roofing membrane. \"When we drill holes for the anchors, we compromise the waterproofing. Caulking can help, but is error-prone and requires maintenance that you can't access later. This does not make it a reliable long-term solution. We were therefore looking for a way to achieve waterproof anchoring without these drawbacks.\"<\/p>\n<h2>The solution: an innovative plastic drop-out block and watertight flange nut<\/h2>\n<p>To address these challenges, SPARQ developed a plastic infill block that not only provides a stable base, but also contributes to waterproofing. Spijksma explains, \"The block lifts the balustrade profile slightly relative to the substrate. By adding a sealant at the bottom and top, we seal the connection between the block and the structural substrate watertight. This prevents rainwater from entering the structure through the anchor and causing damage.\"<\/p>\n<p>Besides the drop-out block, a watertight flange nut is also essential to completely prevent leakage. \"Rainwater can enter not only through the anchor, but also through the nut in the clamping profile. This is why we have developed a special watertight flange nut. This is a large cap flange nut made of stainless steel 316 with an integrated EPDM O-ring that provides a watertight seal between the nut and the clamp profile. This eliminates water infiltration through the nut, which is a crucial addition to the system,\" says Spijksma.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\"When we drill holes for the anchors, we compromise the waterproofing. We were therefore looking for a way to achieve waterproof anchoring without these drawbacks.\"<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Practical application and benefits<\/h2>\n<p>Filler blocks are easy to integrate into the installation process. Installers can use a laser to measure out the required height and choose the right thickness from a range of infill blocks. This ensures accurate alignment and solid fixing of the balustrade profile.<\/p>\n<p>\"The system enables watertight anchoring without external specialists. This saves time and costs, while increasing installation reliability. We therefore expect this innovation to be widely accepted in the market,\" Spijksma said.<\/p>\n<h2>Sustainability and the future<\/h2>\n<p>Besides functionality, sustainability is a key principle in product development at SPARQ. \"We are constantly working on circular solutions. The drop-out blocks are recyclable and could potentially be produced from recycled ABS material in the future,\" says Spijksma.<\/p>\n<p>The first projects with the new backfill blocks will be carried out in the coming period. \"The first reactions from the market are positive. We expect this product to become a standard solution for waterproof anchoring of balustrades.\"<\/p>\n<p>At SPARQ, we continue to look at improvements and innovations that contribute to more efficient and sustainable construction solutions. This cut-out block and waterproof flange nut are a good example of how smart product development can contribute to practical improvements in the construction
